- An Exhibition of Watercolour Paintings by Helen HilliardThe Grange Gallery (Rottingdean Heritage) An Exhibition of Watercolour Paintings by Helen Hilliard The Grange in Rottingdean, Sussex, will be holding an exhibition of botanical watercolour paintings by Sussex artist Helen Hilliard (1921–2004), sponsored by the Rhododendron, Camellia and Magnolia Group (RCMG) of the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS). The exhibition will present watercolours of the three genera that were a favourite of Helen. Helen made great use of her considerable artistic talent, also producing lovely watercolour landscapes and specialising in life-size flower portraits. With her skill and great eye for the finer details, she painted extremely accurately and so beautifully an exact picture; not just of any flower, but an immediately recognisable image of the species or variety, which jumps off the page as being correct. It’s amazing how she could portray a white flower on a white background and make it stand out so clearly! Paintings will be for sale with funds being raised for the MNDA Charity. - Porthleven 100Originally inspired by famous Cornish painter Peter Lanyon’s own depiction, semi-abstract artist Ashley Hanson has been capturing the town of Porthleven, an energetic meeting point between land and sea, since 2008. - Exhibition - Silent Companions A solo show of work by Amy DurySilent Companions A solo show of work by Amy Dury Wed 21st October - Sun 1st November, 11:00am - 5:00pm, or by appointment With solo shows in the UK, New York and Berlin and a major commission for Hermès in Paris that saw her work displayed along the length of the Champs Elysée; the last few months have confirmed Amy Dury as one of the country’s most exciting and in demand young artists. Her new show, Silent Companions, continues Dury’s fascination with figures from the recent past. She writes; “Looking back into our recent past is an act of remembering and nostalgic misremembering, with photographs and film becoming the vehicle which constructs stories about ourselves. - Exhibition - It's Alright: The Permission Project, by Caroline Oleron Because you're allowed to feel that wayWed 28th October - Sun 1st November, 10:00am - 6:00pm Sat 31st October: workshop, 11:00am - 2:00pm (details TBA) It's Alright is a participatory exhibition built around hundreds of voices responding to a single question: "It's alright that I..." No response is too small, too trivial, or too big to be included. Every voice carries equal weight. The exhibition unfolds across two rooms. The first presents twelve artworks exploring the themes that connect us all — relationships, self-worth, hopes and fears. The second room invites visitors to immerse themselves in the collective responses. Following a path through the voices of others, they may discover that we are not as alone in our thoughts and feelings as we imagined. It's Alright is an invitation to give yourself permission to feel exactly what you feel — and to know that somewhere, someone else feels it too. Visitors are invited to add their own voice to the project. Artist biography: Caroline Oleron is a painter based in Hove. She trained at Penninghen in Paris and West Surrey College of Art and Design in Farnham (now the University for the Creative Arts), and is currently completing an MA in Creative Practice with the University of Plymouth. Her work is driven by an intuitive approach to layering and colour, rooted in a deep connection to the natural and botanical world. Her paintings explore themes of hiding and concealment. It's Alright: The Permission Project is her first solo exhibition. - From the EarthThe Grange Gallery (Rottingdean Heritage) From the Earth ‘From the Earth’ brings together the work of three distinctive Sussex artists, each with a unique take on their chosen discipline. Drawing from 28 years in landscape design, Alan translates architectural precision into ceramic art. Inspired by Japanese aesthetics and Antoni Gaudí, his work now centres on experimental Raku firing. Through complex, detailed forms, he bridges the gap between organic design and refined artistry, continually evolving his creative practice. Inspired by the ever-changing Sussex countryside, Gareth creates atmospheric landscapes in both acrylic and oil. His paintings are not literal depictions of a place, but imagined environments that capture the feeling and essence of a landscape. Gareth hints at familiar scenes rather than defining them. This intentional ambiguity invites the viewer to bring their own memories and emotions to the work. Mark blends photography, painting and collage to transform landscape images into atmospheric, painterly abstractions. Printed on brushed aluminium, his work gains unique depth and contemporary feel. By focusing on the monumental presence of trees and tagging each piece with GPS coordinates, he invites viewers to rediscover the natural world.
