Heritage Open Days, events at the Town House Talk: Women in the Arts in Brighton & Hove

Sun 13th September, 12:00noon - 4:00pm, talk at 1:30pm admission free The Brighton and Hove Women’s History Group will be giving a talk on some of the women who will appear in our latest book. Sylvia Bluck will introduce us to some of the local women who over the last 200 years have written novels, poetry, memoirs, hymns and a wide range of non-fiction. Some are still in print, like the novelist, Georgette Heyer (1902-1974), credited with inventing the Regency romance genre. Others have been forgotten, such as the diarist Evelyn, Princess Blücher (1876-1960), married to a Prussian aristocrat, who became a controversial chronicler of life inside Germany during WW1. Many others combined their writing with conventional domestic lives, while others were mired in scandal. Brighton School of Art, photo courtesy University of Brighton Design Archives Clare Hughes will be looking at women artists who lived and or worked in Brighton and Hove. Brighton has a rich history of being home to artists. Women have played their part in this story and they need to shine! She has uncovered otherwise unheard of local women artists. Laura Bayley, left, and Nell Emerald, right. Gerry Holloway is researching women involved in the stage and screen in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. She focuses on women who as well as being stage actresses became involved with the early Brighton and Hove film industry. This will include actresses and film makers Laura Bayley and Nell Emerald.
